KIDNEY DISEASE

The kidney is a very important organ in the body. They are two bean-shaped organs that is  located in the lower back on either side of the spine. The roles of the kidney in maintaining overall health include the following:

1. The kidney helps in filtering waste and excess fluids: Kidneys are important organs that remove waste products, such as urea, and excess water from the blood to produce urine.

2. They regulate electrolytes in the body: Kidneys help maintain the balance of essential electrolytes in the body such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

3. To maintain pH balance: Kidneys help regulate the acid-base balance in the body by removing excess hydrogen ions.

4. They produce hormones: Kidneys produce hormones that helps to regulate blood pressure, produce red blood cells and maintain strong bones

5. Maintaining blood pressure: The kidney helps to regulate blood pressure by controlling fluid balance and blood vessel constriction.

6. Support bone health: The kidney helps to maintain bone health of the body by regulating calcium and phosphorus levels.

Kidney disease also known as RENAL DISEASE can be categorized into three which are the chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney stones. In my next write up, I will be explaining these three categories of the kidney disease. The general symptoms of kidney disease include Fatigue, swelling, nausea, confusion, bone disease, headaches, blood in urine (Hematuria) and the likes. For advanced stages it may result in heart disease also known as cardiovascular disease, anemia, muscle wasting, protein energy malnutrition and the likes.

It is very essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to support kidney health. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help detect kidney disease early on, and prevent or slow its progression.
