Osteoporosis and Nutrition
Osteoporosis is a medical condition that is characterized by reduction in bone density, weakened bones and also increased risk of fractures. There are several factors that can contribute to the causes of osteoporosis and they include;
- Aging
- Hormonal changes or imbalance
- Genetics
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Poor nutrition or undernutrition of some nutrients
- Medical conditions, Certain medications and so on
Also, symptoms characterized with osteoporosis are; back pain, loss of height, fractures, chronic pains and disability. Nutrition plays a very important role in preventing and managing osteoporosis. A well balanced diet that is rich in essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, protein, potassium, vitamin k, magnesium, omega 3 Fatty acids are highly recommended. These nutrients are taken in certain proportion that is why it is essential to an health provider or a registered dietitian in order to know how to incorporate these diets into your meals.
Some foods that support bone health include, dairy products, fortified plant based milk, leafy greens, nut and seeds, whole grains, Fatty fish and so on. It is also important to be hydrated and abstain from taking excessive alcohol, caffeine, sodium and phosphoric acid.
Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis
1. Incorporating Calcium and vitamin D supplements in diet
2. Exercise regularly( e.g weight-bearing, resistance, and balance training)
3. Healthy diet (i.e food rich in calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, potassium etc)
4. Fall prevention strategies i.e prevent from falling
5. Medications like bisphosphonates, hormone therapy, calcitonin)
6. Lifestyle modifications (quit smoking, limit alcohol and caffeine)
Early detection of osteoporosis and the management can help prevent fractures and improve the quality of life. Also remember to always consult your doctor or dietcian for proper monitoring and evaluation.
